Jamain & Frontisi

A beautiful French 1935 art deco chandelier in nickel plated solid brass or bronze by Célestin Jamain holding shades in clear frosted moulded-pressed glass. The four large panels are signed Frontisi. After the first worldwar Célestin Jamain took over Etablissement Jamain-Laurent the company of his father at 17-19 rue Gambey in Paris. During the interbellum he turned it into a large and succesful manufactory of bronze lighting fixtures. The old Jamain product catalogs show he used glass shades from many different glass factories such as Degué Muller and Schneider. The chandelier on offer is represented in the 1933 C.Jamain catalog (the catalog is no part of this sale).

Frontisi was a wholesale for electriciens and lighting producers in Paris. It had a panel a side-shade and a bowl designed that is signed with its own signature. But Frontisi was not a glass manufacturer. It is uncertain which factory made these Frontisi shades. At first Jamain made this model chandelier with EJG made side-shades. When Frontisi 1934 onwards had small shades with the same deco as the panels Jamain started using those.

The chandelier has a total height of 80 cm (31-1/2") and a diameter of 78 cm (30,7"). It is in very good condition. I have renickeled and patinated the mounting. And it comes newly wired. It holds four American standard sockets and four candelabra base ones. For European countries I will place E27 and E14 sockets.

French lamps and wiring

Art deco lamps made in France were equiped with B22 bayonet sockets. For most countries like Europe or the US such sockets are practicaly impossible to use. For instance in the States 110 volt bulbs with B22 fitters are obscure, very hard to find and only one model bulb in very limited wattages is available. In spite of what sellers of unrestored pieces of poor quality claim in their ads when they offer lamps with bayonet caps sockets : except for the UK and Australia French chandeliers and lamps need to be rewired for your country. In order to fit Edison large or small screw base bulbs as used in the USA, B22 sockets have to be replaced by American candelabra base or standard/medium size Edison screw-in sockets. E14 and E27 are modern replacements for European countries. An additional complication is that the size thread used in early French lighting to connect the sockets to the chandelier mountings or lamp bases is not compatible with the modern size threads used in the USA and Europe. New American or European sockets do not just screw on to the old lamp fixtures. In order to make it possible to use an original old French chandelier or lamp with modern screw bulb bases, a specialized restorer will have to re-tap the threads. All my cleaned and restored chandeliers, sconces and lamps come rewired with the correct sockets you will need to use modern bulbs in your country.
