wall sconces by J. Gauthier - EJG Ezan

A beautiful pair of French art deco wall sconces around 1935. Polished solid brass mounts hold plume shaped slip shades in enamelled molded-pressed glass. The shades have a frosted structured surface on the inside giving them a vivid appearance. On the outside the glass is high-lighted with gold enamel.  The shades are signed Ezan france. For the large glass manufactory of Jean Gauthier in the town of Ezanville a little north of Paris. In the 30s it became wellknown for its glassware in bluish opalescent semi-crystal like we can often see on Charles Ranc or Henri Petitot chandeliers of the mid thirties. The sconces are in excellent condition. I have cleaned and polished the brass fixtures. And they come rewired. I placed american candelabra base sockets. For Europe I can wire with E14 sockets or  B22 bayonet ones for the UK and Australia.  The shades are without chips or cracks. Some non-disturbing minimal signs of wear to the gold enamel on the glass-surface. The sconces are 33,5 cm high (13-3/16") and the 11 cm wide (4-5/16").

Free worldwide shipping. The sconces will be shipped with full insurance by priority mail.

Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first worldwar Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in moulded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J.Robert pseudonym for J.Gauthier based on the streetname of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.

French lamps and wiring

Art deco lamps made in France were equiped with B22 bayonet sockets. For most countries like Europe or the US such sockets are practicaly impossible to use. For instance in the States 110 volt bulbs with B22 fitters are obscure, very hard to find and only one model bulb in very limited wattages is available. In spite of what sellers of unrestored pieces of poor quality claim in their ads when they offer  lamps with bayonet caps sockets : except for the UK and Australia  French chandeliers and lamps need to be rewired for your country. In order to fit Edison large or small screw base bulbs as used in the USA, B22 sockets have to be replaced by American candelabra base or standard/medium size Edison screw-in sockets.  E14 and E27 are modern replacements for European countries.   An additional complication is that the size thread used in early French lighting to connect the sockets to the chandelier mountings or lamp bases is not compatible with the modern size threads used in the USA and Europe. New American or European sockets do not just screw on to the old lamp fixtures.  In order to make it possible to use an original old French chandelier or lamp with modern screw bulb bases, a specialized restorer will have to re-tap the threads.  All my cleaned and restored chandeliers, sconces and lamps come rewired with the correct sockets you will need to use modern bulbs in your country.
